Gary Calton for the Observer Once upon a time, eating out was simple. There were restaurants, where you’d sit and be waited on, guzzle and pay. And there were dinner parties, where you’d bring a bottle and talk about sex and house prices with people you didn’t always know. And that was that: Jets and Sharks, chalk and chorizo, a twain that never would meet. And then, in the last year or so, came supper clubs: Ordinary people, keen to earn a lateral bob, began opening their basements and kitchen-diners to paying strangers, and chefs who relish independence and informality started cooking for people at home or in unlikely places like disused warehouses, building sites and houseboats.

Sake no Hana Where: Sake no Hana is the leading Japanese restaurant of the Hakkasan group which includes the eponymous Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, as well as the fabulous Yauatcha, where you can find some of the best dim sum and patisserie in London, at any of their two branches in Soho and the City. The London Foodie is a huge fan of the group, and I am always on the lookout for new menus. We arrived on a Monday evening at 9pm to find the restaurant packed.

The Brickhouse Supper Club is located at the Truman Brewery site and was created in more opulent times, when this love child of Bistroteque and Sketch was just what east London’s dining scene cried out for, a completely different experience in the humdrum of entertainment venues.

There was also a form of supper club which acted as an informal dating platform. Both have largely been replaced by modern nightclubs. The term “Supper club” is enjoying a revival with slightly different meaning – generally a small underground club often with roving premises which are only revealed to the guests when they buy a ticket , where guests eat from a restricted or set menu [8] and are expected to fraternise with other guests whom they may not know. These are advertised by word of mouth and on social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

I decided five or six years ago it was time to realise my project of a life of Grose, a hommage, a profile, but not in the form of a classic biography. I would follow him into the bars and clubs, the backstreets, precincts and sink estates of 21st-century England, seeking out the low-lifers of today and recording the richly evocative, scabrous and exotic codes in which they communicate. Back in the publication of a short Grose glossary prompted a conversation with Roland White of the Sunday Times.

This is his article… Pay attention, all you hopper-arsed hoddy doddys. Gather round, you dandyprats, Jerry Sneaks and jolter heads. Any ale drapers and mutton mongers at the back should sit up straight and stop fiddling with their inexpressibles. And if anybody else wants to know what that was all about, they should adjust their periwigs and read on.

I was already crabbed and weatherbeaten with age — and possessed a more or less fully functioning kitchen and a dozen or so more or less fully functioning friends — when the whole supper club thing took off. This relaunch is bound to require a period of readjustment on both sides This relaunch is bound to require a period of readjustment on both sides: The day we took the shed: We sat there, straight out of central casting, two big-boned northern European bourgeois Italophiles, alighting greedily on things in the menu with little oohs and aahs, taking pains to pronounce the names right.

Food was simple and good, as promised. A big bowl of clams came with plenty of slurpable, winey broth. Pasta dishes were exceptional. Pappardelle with slow-cooked pork and porcini were deeply autumnal, consoling and bounteous, and — one advantage of not having to make 30 portions at a time, maybe — not overcooked. Rigatoni with cavolo nero and pine nuts were a rich mossy green, perfumed with whizzed-up herbs and either nutmeg or mace, we assumed.

Forza Win is now officially my second-favourite contemporary Italian restaurant in a reclaimed industrial space But still.
