Share Tweet There unfortunately is not a perfect procedure for connecting your utility RV hookups. Awareness Be sure to get a spot in a campground that has the appropriate RV hookups for your type of rig and has enough room to accommodate the size. The coveted pull through sites are always a plus! Find the site hookups and see if you can keep the sewer connection as close to the RV as possible. Have a look around the site before pulling in to get a good feeling for how you want to be positioned.
Making life safer Most caravans, motorhomes and folding campers have electrical equipment fitted by design. If you are bringing electricity into a tent you will need to buy a special hook-up lead with two or more damp-proof sockets, each of which will take ordinary 13A plug, as you would use at home.
But we were novice RV owners and had to learn some lessons the hard way. The first six years we traveled like many other RVers, forced to hop from one campground to the next and one electric plug to the next. Our attempts at dry camping and living off our house battery were not very successful. We ended up hurting the house battery in ways that, until recently, we didn’t fully understand.
We started thinking about solar after attending a western RV workshop where, thanks to Phil-the-solar-guy, we saw solar panels on a Roadtrek for the first time. Being the analytical type I tried to determine how long it would take to break even considering how many nights we could spend without paying for a campground with a hookup.
On our trip to Yellowstone and points Northwest we burned out our second house battery. The first time we burned out our house battery it was our fault because we didn’t fully understand what it meant to run a lead-acid gel battery down to zero. The second time it wasn’t directly our fault. A folding chair bumped one of the lights in our storage area under the rear of the coach and turned the light on despite our best effort to duct tape the switch closed.
The sealed gel-type battery was so damaged by the constant load and frequent deep discharge that the sides were swelling out. If you don’t understand the danger in this picture, think of our battery filling up like a balloon with hydrogen and oxygen both very flammable gases under pressure. What do you think would have happened when it finally popped?
RV and Campgrounds
At the few campsites that have electricity provided, there is usually a post at the end of the site’s parking area near the access road, with a standard outdoor electrical outlet. Usually trailer or RV owners will run an extension cord from it to their unit. Some of the bigger campgrounds have central shower and toilet buildings, and possibly these may have electrical outlets for hair appliances etc.
I would suggest contacting staff at whichever park it is where you plan to camp or both. You can also find lists of all the campgrounds on those sites, with details such as amenities provided, nightly rates etc. On re-reading your post, I see you have already found these, but I’ll leave this info in in case it helps other readers.

Home» Camping» Camping Tips» Using an Electric Hook Up (EHU) when Camping Gav Grayston This guide takes you through using electric hook ups, and what appliances you could use when camping, as well as a hand table to work out how much power you can use.
There are some benefits to camping in an RV like your own bathroom , however I admit I have always been a bit nervous about how the hook-ups work. When booking campsites, I see they are available, but without an RV I had never given it a ton of thought. And I admit, I dream of one day being a campground host, where we would potentially live out of an RV for months. These things have led me to learn what I can regarding electrical hook-ups when camping.
I felt overwhelmed and became concerned I would never be able to figure out how electrical systems worked. I admit though, that I was determined. So I dove in and started researching. Fortunately, others are better about explaining how electrical systems and electrical hook-ups work. RV electrical systems can be divided into three different categories: When considering hook-ups, the main systems to look at are the volt DC and volt AC coach systems, as the automotive system functions like a car.
The volt will allow just about everything else in the camper to work, to include the water heater and the furnace. Key to keeping your volt system working is that you have to keep your batteries charged.
There are two main ways you can power electrical devices on the campsite. The first is to use a leisure battery, which is like a car battery and provides a 12V supply, and the second is an electric hook-up, which provides a V supply as you would find at home. To find more about charging leisure batteries see our Battery Charging Data Sheet. Your own power pack A leisure battery is a great way to provide electricity when you are away from a mains connection.
The Coleman Montana 8 Tent and Coleman Elite Montana 8 Tent are tents with electric hook up with exactly same sizes and features other than the replaceable battery .
Recreational Camping for people who want all the comforts of home, primitive camping for those who enjoy closer contact with nature and wilderness camping for the more adventuresome. You can find wide ranges of camping facilities all across the US in each of these categories. Recreational camping is available in thousands of commercial campgrounds across the USA. Most of these facilities include clean toilets, hot showers, laundry facilities and convenience stores.
They are typically equipped to support RVs recreational vehicles such as camping trailers and mobile homes with electric, water and sewer “hookups”. Most of the campers bring all the comforts of home with them such as television, stereo and air-conditioning. You can pitch your tent at such a facility, but it will be expensive since you do not need all the “hookups”.
